THE MAGPIES GET REVENGE ON THE BOMBERS

Magpie Press – May 9th 2005

The Dallas Magpies Australian Football club has started off the 2005 MAAFL season with a comprehensive win over the Milwaukee Bombers, 10.7.67 to 5.11.41.

Under threatening skies and chilly temperatures, the ‘Pies set about for revenge for last years loss to the Bombers in Dallas.  Determined not to let history repeat itself the visiting side came out guns blazing and while Milwaukee put the first goal of the game on the scoreboard, it was the only time they would hold the lead throughout the 4 quarters.

Dallas had entered into the match minus some key position players and lacking in height but this deficiency was more than made up for by their strong on ball squad and bullet proof defense.  Rotating ruckman proved to be a handful for the Milwaukee tall timber and Dallas dominated the center bounces, getting first touch on numerous occasions.  Samuelson and Neary were very well supported in the middle by a host of on-ballers, including first gamer Robbie Rothlien who nullified forward advances from the Bombers.

It wasn’t until mid way through the second term that Dallas really started to take control. Every possession was turned into an opportunity, as the strong Dallas back line combined to transfer the ball to waiting mid-fielders and forwards.  Dallas went in at half time with a slight lead but nothing to be too comfortable about.  Players from the previous season knew all to well that Milwaukee was a young and fit team who played four full quarters.

After some refocusing and energizing at half time, Dallas jumped the gun and kicked the first couple of goals.  Campbell combined with Bliss, Haesecke and Neary to push the ball forward to the very creative forward line, which didn’t disappoint, kicking truly on many occasions.

Going into the last quarter Dallas held a 3 goal lead but were not about to relax.  Pre-season fitness work was starting to pay off as the 16 man squad started to out pace their opposition players.   In the end the Dallas players were too good on the day, all across the ground.  It was a tremendous team effort from the backline to the forwards and every player gave 110%.  Full credit must go to the Milwaukee Bombers, who never gave in and fought out the contest until the final siren.  Dallas ran out eventual winners by 26 points.

This win puts Dallas in a good position early in the year with a week break until they take on the Chicago Swans at Lookout Park in Richardson, Texas. This is a 12:00 noon showdown that is a must see game with both teams winning their first round.
